An Experimental study on the Effects of Various Physical Stimulation on the Status of Tissue Mast Cells in the Skin and Various Tissue of the Oral Cavity
Shim Seung-Ok

Abstract
Observations on the appearance of tissue mast cells in the skin tissue and various tissues in the palate, tongue, and cheek were made after stimulating them physically with mechanical compression-friction, warm water, ice piece, infra-red ray, ultra-violet ray in the oral cavity, with follow-ups after various time intervals, using healthy albino-rats weighing 120-130 gms. each. The following results were obtained. 1. After the application of various physical stimulations in the oral cavity, the number of tissue mast cells in the skin tissue and various tissues of the oral cavity showed rapid decrease, reaching the minimal levels at 30 min. to one hour after the stimulation, and gradual increase thereafter to the normal level.
2. The time interval after reaching the minimal level till the recovery to normal level in the number of tissue mast cells were longer when the decrease of cell number were severe, and all the experimental groups except those stimulated by ultra-violet rays showed recovery in 3,5 and 7 hours groups. 3. The most severe changes on the tissue mast cells in the skin and various oral tissues were obtained by the irradiation of ultra-violetray, followed by ice piecestimulation, infra-red ray irradiation, and warm water stimulation, in the decreasing order, but the mechanical compression-friction group showed changes similar to the control group, making it difficult to recognize any definite influence 4. In the ultra-violet ray irradiated group which showed the most severe changes in the tissue mast cells, the time to reach the minimal level and the time for recovery to normal level both showed delay when compared to the other experimental groups, and the minimal levels were reached at one hour group in the palate and tongue tissues, and 3 hours group in the skin and cheek tissues. The recovery to normal level in the number of cells were obtained at the 10 hours groups in all of them. 5. The changes in the appearance of tissue mast cells in the skin tissues of left thigh after applying various physical stimulations in the oral cavity were similar to those found in the tissues of oral cavity which were directly stimulated. Therefore, the changes in the tissue mast-cells is not only a local reaction to the stimulation but also should be considered as a part of systemic reaction. 6. In the morphology of the tissue mast cells after various physical stimulation, the percentage of the normal mast cells decrease and that of the degranulating form of the tissue mast cells increase when the number of tissue mast cells decrease, and thereafter, as the number of mast cells increases, the percentage of the normal form increase and that of the degranulating form decrease, thus reaching the normal state. In general, the time of recovery in the percentage of the normal forms lagged behind that in the number of mast cells in all of the experimental groups.
